How Often Should You Really See the Dentist?

You have probably heard the advice to see a dentist every six months. For most people that is a good rhythm, but it is a starting point rather than a rule.
Why six months works for most people
Plaque hardens into tartar within weeks, and tartar can only be removed with professional tools. A cleaning every six months keeps buildup from ever getting a foothold, and it gives your dentist a chance to catch small problems while they are still small. A cavity found early is a simple filling; the same cavity found two years later can mean a crown or a root canal.
When more frequent visits make sense
Some patients benefit from cleanings every three to four months. That includes people with gum disease or a history of it, smokers, patients with diabetes, and anyone who builds tartar quickly. If that is you, your dentist will say so and explain why.
When life gets in the way
If it has been years since your last visit, you are not alone and nobody here will lecture you. The most important appointment is simply the next one. Weekend appointments make it easier to fit a checkup into a busy schedule.
