5 Everyday Habits for a Healthier Smile

What you do between visits matters more than the visits themselves. The good news: none of it is complicated.

1. Brush twice, but gently

Two minutes, twice a day, with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Hard scrubbing does not clean better; it wears down enamel and irritates gums. Let the bristles do the work.

2. Floss once a day

A toothbrush cannot reach the surfaces between teeth, which is where many cavities start. If traditional floss frustrates you, floss picks and water flossers count too. The best flossing method is the one you will actually do.

3. Watch the sipping, not just the sugar

A soda finished in ten minutes is far less damaging than the same soda sipped over two hours, because each sip restarts the acid attack on your enamel. The same goes for sports drinks, sweetened coffee, and juice. Water in between helps rinse acids away.

4. Do not ignore bleeding gums

Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are inflamed, and inflammation is the first stage of gum disease. Caught early it is fully reversible with better home care and a professional cleaning.

5. Keep your checkups

Home care handles the day to day, but only a professional cleaning removes hardened tartar, and only an exam catches problems you cannot feel yet. Pair good habits with regular visits and most dental emergencies simply never happen.
